Video for website

Today I finally finished the video that will be on my website. I chose to make it quite simplistic so that the viewers don't get confused or feel as though anything is too complicated. Therefore, I simply edited the clips so that they only showed the important parts and add fade in and out effects onto the end of each clip so that it faded into the next to show the movement of time, and also the next step in the recipe.

Advert

Today I created the advert that will be on every page of my website. I chose to make a WeightWatchers advertisement as I felt it fits in well with the idea of living healthy and having a balanced diet. I also chose to use a small amount of text on the advertisement to appeal more toward the audience. I created it using Photoshop. I firstly got the WeightWatchers log and put that onto a layer, I then found an image that i though was appropriate for the advert and website and added that onto another layer and made the background transparent by using the magic wand tool. Then I added text onto another layer to create the promoting text. As you can see below on the left hand side is the advert in progress and how it looks in Photoshop, and on the right you can see the finished logo and what it will look like on the website.

Filming

Today I filmed a friend creating the recipe that will be on the website. I found the filming quite easy as I did not need to move the camera about too much. I also only had to start recording and end recording every time something changed in the recipe to make it easy for the viewer to follow if they pause and start it. Because of this, it should also be easier to edit on Final Cut Express so that the clips will only need merging together and cutting down.

Rough video idea

This is a basic plan of what will happen in the video so that when I start to film it, I know everything that I need to have in it.

web icons

These are the four web icons that I will have on each page of my website, I have taken the images from the website webtoolkit4.me and turned them into an html so that they each go to a social networking site. I have included these icons as most websites now have social networking icons on them so that more people can hear about the site and acess it in different ways. I also chose these particular images for the icons, as they are different and make the web page look a bit more interesting. I also asked 10 different people whether they prefered the normal icons or these and 8 out of the 10 said these ones as they are trendy and different. However, the other two said that some people may not recognise them as much.

screen shots of my website in progress

This is my website in progress, as you can see, I have not used a template to create this, but I have followed a conventional layout of a website by having the row at the top and columns underneath it. I have created a base layout that I can copy and paste onto each page so that they are all the same and everything is in line on each page. I will then start to fill in the blanks and make each page unique with colour and of course text.

Creating my website

Today I started to create my website. To do this I am using a program called Iweb and creating my website from scratch. Although there are templates to use, I think I will find it alot easier for me to do from a blank page as I can put things where I wish without any hassle and therefore make my website unique. So far it has been quite easy to get the hang of, and I have just started to create a basic layout on my homepage of where I want everything to go, so that I can put things in easily when it comes down to text and images. I then created three more blank pages and copied and pasted what I had done on the homepage so that everything is in the same place and the layout is consistent.

Photoshop

Today I worked on the photos that I wanted on my website. Some photos, I felt did not need any editing so i have kept them as they are. However, some needed work done on them. I decided that some images needed to be brightened as they were dark in some places, so I selected the parts that I needed and then went to adjustments, brightness and contrast and and changed the brightness so that the images were the right brightness. Other images just needed to be cropped to hide any unnecessary parts of the image. here are some of the images that I have edited.

Photos for website

Today I went to the supermarket to take some photo's to go onto my webiste. I chose to take photos of food in a supermarket as you can find a variety of healthy food and also food that look appealing and apertizing to any audience. Using Packaged food can also give viewers ideas of the sort of foods that can make a quick and easy meal when they struggle to think about what they fancy. It would also mean that in future if this website were to become real that the pictures could continually be updated and changed easily, rather than having images of actual meals. Here are some of the photo's I have taken.

Logo

Today I added my logo onto my website, at first it was an easy process, however becasue I had not quite got used to Iweb yet, I struggled to find a way to get rid of the background so that it was transparent on the webpage. Eventually I managed to figure it out, however I wish it could have been easier to do so that I could have done it alot quicker.

final logo

Here you can see my final logo. I decided to keep ot black and white as I felt it kept the authentic look and did not clash with any other colours on the background. To create this logo, I firstly took an image of a tape measure from the internet so placed it onto a layer on Photoshop. I then added a new layer and downloaded a font called Jelka Saint Andrews and placed the two letters on top to give it the same look as the logo I originally designed. I am particularly happy with how this has come out as it is a memorable logo, but it does not distract the attention of the viewer too much. Most of the feedback I received was positive, however some people said that it could look better with a cartoon version of the measuring tape, however I felt that this would not fit in with the overall look of the website and therefore did not include it.

Black and white logo design

This is my black and white design for my website logo. I have used a clear font, but it has some character to it but not enough to become too fancy, and by adding the tape measure as this website is about getting healthy, I find that it makes the overall logo alot more memorable and interesting. I am happy with how this has turned out and the only changes I will be making to it will perhaps be adding colour.

result findings

Below, you can see the results I recieved for each question within the questionnaire. I found it interesting that my target audience are 15-18 year olds, and close to it are the 19-25 year olds; when I asked a few of the questionees why they thought this was, most replied, because of todays society and peoples obsession with looks and weight. This I felt is where I need to be careful within my website, to make sure I am promoting healthy lifestyles, rather than losing weight, therefore, I need to consider what sort of imagery and recipes I will have on the website. In particular, I need to take into consideration what sort of imagery to have on my website as the majority of the questionees said they prefer websites to be quite visual. I also found it interesting that there was quite a strong mixture of female and male people who would visit the website, however it was mostly women overall; but, because it was such a mixture, I feel that it would be better to keep the website suitable for both men and women and not target one or the other.

The concerns and raised awareness factors I found when looking through the results were not the only things I noticed. I also need to take into consideration the layout and colour schemes. Although my question about the colour schemes showed that more people wanted to see a mixture of colours, there were still a few people who thought otherwise; therefore, I need to think about a clear colour scheme and make sure that not only do the colours work together, but they are also memorable. As for the layout, it seemed that most people wanted to see something different than the typical layout, but some would rather it was the typical, therefore I will consider mixing the two together. Lastly it was clear that most people remember a campaign through the logo, therefore I need to make sure my logo is different and memorable.

target audience questionnaire

As you can see in the post below, I have created a questionnaire to help me know exactly who my target audience will be and the sort of things they want to see on the website. Hopefully it should give me almost a brief to work around to make it well suited for the target audience.

Institutional research

As we have been set the task to research other campaigns within the same genre that we have picked for our website, I decided to look at Jamie Olivers School Dinners website. After doing my research (post below) I found that there were things that I could incorporate within my website, that I did not even think about when starting this project, nor did I have an idea of how certian things worked, for instance, when you see advertising on a website, it is because they have been given a choice of where they can put their advertising, but they have to buy it. I found that this could be helpful because I can add advertisements into certain parts of my website to make it look more professional.

Analysing six website using media terminology

To start off the research into the campaigns I am looking into, I had to research 6 different websites and annotate them. Here are the first three websites.
These are the last three websites I have annotated:

AS Campaign website.

Today I decided what campaign I wanted to create my website about. I chose to look at Healthy living campaigns as they arent as well known as other campaigns, and I think it is something that everyone can do to help themselves and others out at times.

publishing website

Today I created all the links on my website and made them active. I done this by highlighting the text/box that i wanted to be a link, then clicking on the inspector and choosing the hyperlink button and then making my hyperlink active to either my home or media page, depending on where the link is taking you.
I also added in any additional photos that needed to be put on the website to finalise my preliminary website. I then published my entire site to check that everything was working okay which it was.
Overall i am very pleased with how this website came out. Although at points I found it hard to get used to some of the programs, I think that it will help me greatly when it comes down to creating my main website and having everything to a very high standard.

Using iPhoto to create the slideshow

Today I created the slideshow and added it to my website on my homepage. I did this by adding each of the images I wanted onto the program iPhoto and then changing how long i wanted each slide to be shown for. At first i found it quite tricky to use as I wasn't sure how to use certain parts of it, but after a while it became much clearer and therefore a lot simpler. I then saved this and added it to my website.

editing website

In today's lesson I carried on creating my preliminary website. I added in my previously made logo, and also the text into each of the text box's; I changed the colour, size and font of the text to make it astheticly pleasing to the audience, i also aligned the text to the center of the box. I then added the date and time above the navigation bar. I did this by going to insert - date and time - and chose the style of date and time I wanted. i then changed the font, colour and size, and distributed and aligned them evenly.

editing photos

In today's lesson I decided to edit some of the images I took in previous lessons. I used photoshop to do this. I found that most of the images just needed cropping and the hue/saturation levels needed changing to make the picture look brighter/darker. I also blurred parts of the image to give it a bit more of an airbrushed look. Here are some of the images I have edited:

shotlist for preliminary site

Today I created the shotlist for my website. I then went out and took pictures around the school in places I thought would show the school at its best. during my research I found that the audience prefers images and visual aid on a website as it engages them more and they find it more interesting, therefore I also thought it would be a good idea to create a slideshow for my website using the iPhoto program as it is a simple yet effective program to use.

logo for preliminary site

In today's lesson, I started to create my school logo for my preliminary website. to do this I used the program photoshop. I firstly created the shape of the logo by clicking the shape tool, which then created the shape that I was looking for to the exact size I wanted. I then created the text using the text tool, and changed it to the size I thought was best, and made the colour black so it would stand out. I then made the inside of the logo green so that it would follow the colour scheme of the website as the research i have done has shown each website to do this. Below is the logo:

survey and results for preliminary website

In todays lesson we looked at different questioners and surveys to make it easier for us to make our own survey, in order to create our preliminary website in a way that people would like. Throughout the survey I thought about the use of demographics (details about the person i.e. gender) and psychographics (details of what a person likes.
This is a detailed summary of the results for each of the answers to my survey. I decided to do this so that I could see what the best results were and therefore incorperate them into my preliminary website. Below I have made a couple of graphs from the results I have collected, to make it easier to see what the audience would prefer to see on a website, and how different aspects of a website can make people like/disklike it.

creating the preliminary website

In today's lesson I started to create the basic layout for my preliminary website. Firstly I created the school name of the website by creating a text box and then changing the font and colour to exactly how I wanted it. I then started to create my navigation bar by creating 5 text box's with 5 different titles for each pages that would in theory link to their correct page if the pages were made; then, I joined them together, distributed them evenly, and aligned them from the top. to that they were straight. Next, I changed the colour of the background of the text box's to green and changed the colour of the text to black; I also put a shadow around the whole navigation bar to create depth. After, I started to create each of the text box's that would go onto the home page and placed them exactly where they needed to go, aligning them correctly to start to show the layout clearly. I then filled the background of the text box's to the same green as the navigation bar and added shadows to create depth. I then copied and pasted all of this onto another page which would be my media page.

preliminary website design

In todays lesson I drew a design of what I would like my preliminary website to look like. I have gone for a very simple and often used layout, with a typical school logo as it seems most people repoded well to this in the surveys. Both the 'home' and 'media' page will have the logo and image at the top; the navigation bar underneath and a subject link box on the left hand side of the page. There will be many different media links throughout the 'homepage' to make it easy to use for the audience, and the 'media page' will have a clear link back to the 'hompage' on the navigation bar. Although both sketches have come out black and white on the computer, there is a colour scheme throughout of dark green boxes with black writing and a white background. I have tried to keep the typical conventions of a website that I found in my research.

Design Brief for preliminary site

This is my design brief for my preliminary site. I have written a brief to make it easier for me to create the website without missing anything important off of it. Or if anything were to go wrong, I would still have this brief to help me get back on track again. It also shows anyone else who would be interested in the making of the site what would need to be on it.

School website research

Today we started our school website research, I picked four school websites to look at and analyse so that I could learn the forms and conventions of a school website. Here are the analysis's of the four websites chosen.

AS media studies

Today we were introduced to our AS media coursework tasks. We have to create a preliminary website and a main website, The preliminary website must be a school website and our main website must be a campaign website. We must start off by creating our school website so that we can develop our skill on the technologies that are used in creating the websites.
